What is the most inspirational public or private garden you've ever visited?

    Some favorites that come to mind are the NAPLES BOTANIC GARDEN in Naples, FLorida and the new VERTICAL AND ROOF GARDEN AT DESCANSO GARDENS in La Canada, CA.

    Heronswood on Bainbridge Island in Washington the hornbeam gothic hedge is inspiring. If you go to Berlin see Max Leiberman's Villa at Wannsee. Historic house and museum with restored gardens. In Los Angeles one of my favorite public gardens is the Maguire Gardens in downtown Los Angeles, adjacent to the central library.

    Hello. The most memorable garden that I have visited is Innisfree in eastern 

    New York  State . I attended high school just east of that site at New Milford  Connecticut . After many different moves and travels ten years ago I visited Innesfree and was blown away. The garden is definitely a managed landscape. It is edited and kept form overgrowing as the local hills are. The newly added plant material complements the native landscape. I am awed by the original owner Walter Beck and the Landscape Architect Lester Collins and would love to visit similarly ‘fitted’ gardens in different climate zones.

    Friends have created a garden in the woods on their property near Nevada City. After clearing underbrush of the forest, they created a stream and ponds among the dogwoods and pines.  Beautiful plan, all done on their own using recycled materials found in the area.

    In California- The Sherman Gardens and Library- The 2-1/2 acres of tranquility behind the gate is one whitewashed wall and a world away from the bustle of Pacific Coast Highway. Where we always take visitors or anyone thinking about taking up gardening. 

    In the US (not California) The Cheyenne Botanical Garden. A different world about promise and prairie. 

    In the World- The RHS gardens at Wisley. Went on a whim on the recommendation of hospitality at the hotel we were staying in at Farnborough. I could have spent the week in just the bookshop. Then there are the unending gardens. With espaliered fruit trees and plant grown in greenhouses I could brag about because they grow in our yards here):-  I would give up a year of my life to spend a month there.

    I have been on several garden tours in the US and abroad and a few gardens have really made a lasting impression.  Firstly, Odile Masquelier's private rose garden in Lyon, France was truly the 'Alice in Wonderland' experience.  For me, great gardens start with great hardscaping, and Bonn Masion's old, hand-cut stone walls and aged brick provide the perfect backdrop for Olile's collection of 660 plus roses.  The University of British Columbia in Vancouver has an enchanting rose garden that is accented by stately trees and sweeping views of the Pacific.  The best part is the price, free.
