    Grow berry-producing plants.  I can't believe I had Western Bluebirds show up at my house this year! They were eating the camphor tree berries, along with the regular crowd of Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, and those darned Pasadena wild parrots.

    I'm growing Sambucus mexicana [California elderberry] that not only make a great home for birds, but also will shade and screen when big. 
    I am lowering a potentially invasive Sapium sebiforum(Chinese Tallow tree) as the Elderberries grow up.  
    Noticed more birds and bird types in the back yard meadow verses original grass.  
    The shrubs around the edges are to screen neighbors and allow good cover out of cat reach while giving me visual enjoyment.

    We have 3 watering spots, plus plenty of nectar, seed, fruit, and berry producing plants. There is lots of undisturbed cover for nests at various levels (the hummingbirds nest with us in a couple of locations every year).  We use no pesticides, so insect-gatherers like the bushtits and the phoebes are regulars in the garden.  The cats are regulars, too, looking for prey.
