WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOTANICAL SIGN THAT AUTUMN HAS ARRIVED?

Around September 22 this year, I heard a welcome sound in my backyard I hadn't heard for many months: the call of a White-Crowned Sparrow. Migratory birds seems to be pretty clued in to the change of seasons, so their arrival means I can start thinking about winter veggies and pruning tasks! Although my sparrows are more of a faunal sign than a floral one, what botanical signs do you see heralding autumn?

I am excited in the fall by the change in light - the sun visibly slipping lower in the sky, the longer shadows, a different shine on the leaves, and everything strangely brighter even as the sun slips away from us. This phenomenon energizes me and it seems to energize all the garden creatures. Insects, small mammals and birds all seem to be making the most of what remains. And I finish up my plans and get ready to return to serious gardening.
