In anticipation of our August 8 meeting featuring our esteemed horticulturist Lili Singer and her talk on Beneficial Bugs in the Garden, the Sharing Secrets question of the month is:

Do you encourage beneficial insects in your garden? And if so, how?

Let us know and share your answers with other members in our Sharing Secrets Forum in the Memberlodge Section of our website.

Number one way is by staying organic.  No. 2, if I must intervene due to an intensive invasion of harmful insects in order to protect a plant, I only spray the affected areas and not carpet bomb the whole garden using a pyrethran or appropriate organic intervention. I try to be very aware of all potential impacts of sprays--pyrethrans can kill fish so I am very careful around the koi.

Most recently I let my large potted red chard plant go to flower when the weather heated up instead of replacing it with another crop plant.  While meant to attract beneficial insects to other nearby edibles in the garden , the large display was also very ornamental.
